Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the process of hair removal by using an electric current to destroy hair follicles. The procedure uses an epilator tool in which a small needle is inserted into the hair follicle. This needle is where the heat energy is transferred, to destroy the hair follicle.

Sound painful?

That’s because it usually is. Like laser hair removal, the technology of electrolysis has improved so that the pain inflicted has lessened. However, there’s only so much you can do to minimize the pain of a tiny needle in your hair follicle. In addition to the initial pain of the treatment, side effects are extremely common and can be severe- such as:

  • Skin discoloration
  • Scabbing
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Bruising
  • Scarring

In most aspects, laser hair removal is superior to electrolysis. Overall, laser hair removal is a safer treatment and has a higher efficacy rate. Unlike electrolysis, laser hair removal can target large areas of skin in a little amount of time with no downtime. Additionally, laser hair removal treatments have a dramatically lower risk of side effects such as pigmentation and scarring.

But I heard electrolysis is more permanent/effective, is this true?

This question has more than a yes or no answer. For laser hair removal, over 90% of patients report the permanent loss of unwanted hair following a laser hair removal treatment.

To elaborate you may have heard that electrolysis is backed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as a permanent solution to hair removal. We are not here to argue that fact- it is. However, consider this: the permanence is only viable if the treatments are completed as intended. This means that a client risks severe side effects and mush maintain the schedule of electrolysis appointments about once a week to see the desired results. This means that, while theoretically true that electrolysis is permanent, the risks far outweigh the reward and many clients end up wasting money on treatments that they don’t finish.
